All About Moldavite
What is moldavite?
Moldavite is a tektite: a natural green glass formed approximately 14.8 million years ago, when a meteorite impact melted terrestrial sediments and projected them into the air, where they solidified. It is therefore not the meteorite itself, but terrestrial rock melted by the impact.

Where is moldavite found?
Over 99% comes from Southern Bohemia, in the Czech Republic. Small quantities are also found in Moravia, Lusatia (Germany), Austria, and, in traces, in Poland.

Why is moldavite green?
The color comes from the elements present in the melt — especially iron, partly manganese — as well as the thickness of the stone. Shades range from bottle green to the extremely rare "poison" green.

Is moldavite truly glass of meteoritic origin?
Yes: it is natural glass formed from a meteoritic impact, not a laboratory-synthesized material. However, it should be clarified that it originates from the melting of terrestrial rocks caused by the impact, not from the meteorite body itself.

What are the color variations of moldavite?
They range from olive green to dark green, with rare specimens having lighter or brownish hues. There is even an extremely rare white moldavite, the so-called snowflakes.

What are the properties of moldavite?
From a physical point of view, it is a natural siliceous glass (silicon dioxide with traces of aluminum, iron, and magnesium), green, translucent, with a Mohs hardness of approximately 6.5–6.9. The spiritual properties attributed to it, however, belong to tradition.

How to tell if moldavite is original?
Observe the color (natural olive green, never fluorescent), the sculpted and irregular surface, inclusions and bubbles, consistent weight and price, and, above all, provenance and certificate. Moldavite does not exist in blue, yellow, or red.

How to distinguish a fake or treated moldavite?
Beware of overly shiny or uniform glass, unnatural brilliant colors, "too perfect" sculpting, identical pieces sold in multiple copies, and excessively low prices. A quick method: under UV light, real moldavite remains inert; many fakes (e.g., uranium glass) glow.

Where can I safely purchase moldavite?
Trust reputable and recognized sellers, always ask for an authenticity and provenance certificate, avoid generic marketplaces and overly cheap offers.

Is moldavite dangerous?
In lithotherapy, moldavite is considered a stone with very intense energy: some people, when holding it, feel warmth, tingling, or slight dizziness (the so-called “Moldavite flush”). This is not a real danger, but a subjective experience linked to folklore. For beginners, it is advisable to proceed gradually and combine it with gentler stones such as amethyst or lepidolite. On a physical level, however, it is completely safe: it is natural glass, neither radioactive nor toxic (just be careful of the sharp edges of rough pieces).
