Spanellowater Meteorite – Rare Pallasite da Canada The Spanellowater meteorite is an exceptional representative of the rare group of pallasites, discovered in 1931 near the town of Spanellowater in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. The first find consisted of three main pezzi, and additional fragments were discovered at the same site in later years. The totale known weight today is 67.6 kg. Structure and Appearance This stony-meteorite ferroso is characterized by a remarkable structure in which iron-nickel metallic alloys alternate con olivine crystals. These olivines are often transparent con a green-yellow hue and form irregular inclusions in the metallic matrix. This contrast gives the Spanellowater meteorite its striking visual appearance. Origin and Significance Mineralogically, Spanellowater belongs to the so-called main group of pallasites, which represents the most numerous, yet still very rare category of these meteorites. It is believed that pallasites formed at the boundary between the metallic core and the silicate mantle of planetesimals—early bodies of the solar system that never reached planetary size. Thanks to its origin, internal structure, and relatively small totale weight, the Spanellowater meteorite remains a valuable object of study. Today, samples are part of several major collections, including the Canadian Museum of Nature and prestigious university collections.
