Rubellite from Madagascar – a rare variety of tourmaline with a unique color Madagascar rubellite is among the tourmaline varieties valued by collectors. It is a red to pink variety of the mineral elbaite, whose name is primarily used for stones with a rich, "ruby-like" color that maintains its hue even in different lighting conditions. It forms in granitic pegmatites under specific conditions, where the residual melt contains high concentrations of elements such as lithium, aluminum, and boron. The characteristic red color is primarily caused by the presence of manganese, the quantity of which influences the intensity of the resulting hue. Locality and typical characteristics Madagascar is an important source of tourmalines, and rubellites from this region are known for a wide range of colors, from delicate pink hues to deep red shades. A slightly warmer hue is typical, often with raspberry-wine tones that give the stones a distinctive and natural appearance. Quality and collectible value In terms of quality, Madagascar rubellites are often well-translucent, although inclusions are not rare and are typical for this type of mineral. Some specimens show zoned coloring, i.e., natural color transitions within a single crystal. The most valuable pieces are those with an intense red color free of brownish tones, which appear vivid even in low light conditions. Madagascar rubellite represents an interesting combination of aesthetic appeal and accessibility. Compared to the best rubellites from other localities, it can be more affordable while maintaining high collectible and visual value. Rubellite – Befisiotra mine, Madagascar
