The precious opal from Dubník is considered one of the rarest and most beautiful gemstones in the world. This exceptional stone formed millions of years ago during post-volcanic activity, when specific chemical and physical conditions necessary for its formation occurred inside a volcano. Even the slightest change in these conditions could have prevented the birth of such a rare gem. Dubník opal is distinguished by its extraordinary color: the light passing through the stone's particular microstructure creates a breathtaking optical phenomenon, perceived by the human eye as moving rays of color. The body of the stone is generally white or translucent, a characteristic that further accentuates the play of colors. The history of opal mining in Dubník dates back to the 16th century, when Emperor Rudolf II of Habsburg granted permission to search for them. Mining became so important that interest in opals grew enormously, and these precious stones were sought after by European nobility and rulers. Famous personalities who owned jewelry with Dubník opals included Maria Theresa of Austria, Napoleon Bonaparte, Louis XVIII of France, Elisabeth of Bavaria, and Queen Victoria. The historical importance of these gems is also demonstrated by the prices they fetched: often the value exceeded that of 100 grams of pure gold for a single carat of opal. The British royal family, for example, paid the equivalent of seven million euros for a single opal. The golden age of opal mining in Dubník occurred between 1830 and 1896. Although opals were discovered in Australia in the mid-19th century, Dubník opals maintained their prestige and continued to be considered the most sought-after in the world. Their uniqueness further increased after the tragedy of 1950, when a precious collection of over 366,000 opals was destroyed in a museum fire, making these specimens even rarer. Today, deep mining is no longer practiced in Dubník, but some people continue to manually search for opals among the rocks. These stones remain highly valued by collectors and jewelers for their rarity and unique beauty. Despite the high cost, Dubník opal retains its status as an exceptional investment, and its value continues to increase due to limited natural reserves and growing demand. Precious opals are distinguished from common synthetic imitations by their long history and origin from exclusive locations like Dubník. While synthetic opals can lose color and quality, authentic Dubník opals are known for their stable and lasting beauty.
