Jambi Obsidian – Volcanic Glass from Indonesia, Sumatra Jambi obsidian is a type of volcanic glass originating from the Jambi province in South Sumatra, Indonesia. It forms through the very rapid cooling of volcanic lava, which prevents mineral crystallization. The result is a natural glass with a smooth, often shiny surface. Obsidian from this area is usually dark black, sometimes with a slight brownish or grayish tint, depending on trace elements and the chemical composition of the original lava. Origin and History The province of Jambi is known for its volcanic activity and rich geological history. Local obsidian was traditionally used for making tools and weapons due to its hardness and the sharp edges formed during flaking. Curiosities It is interesting to note that obsidian can contain tiny gas bubbles or mineral inclusions that make its appearance even more unique. Due to these internal structures, it can display subtle chromatic reflections or appear slightly translucent depending on the angle of light.
