Jambi Obsidian – Volcanic glass from Indonesia, Sumatra Jambi obsidian is a type of volcanic glass originating from the Jambi province in South Sumatra, Indonesia. It forms through the very rapid cooling of volcanic lava, which prevents minerals from crystallizing. The result is a natural glass with a smooth, often shiny surface. Obsidian from this area is usually dark black, sometimes with a slight brownish or grayish tinge, depending on the trace elements and the chemical composition of the original lava. Origin and history Jambi province is known for its volcanic activity and rich geological history. Local obsidian was traditionally used for making tools and weapons due to its hardness and the sharp edges formed during flaking. Curiosities It is interesting to note that obsidian can contain tiny gas bubbles or mineral inclusions that make it even more unique in its appearance. Due to these internal structures, it can show subtle chromatic reflections or appear slightly translucent depending on the angle of the light.
