Jambi Obsidian – Volcanic Glass from Indonesia, Sumatra Jambi obsidian is a type of volcanic glass originating from the province of Jambi in South Sumatra, Indonesia. It forms through the very rapid cooling of volcanic lava, which prevents the crystallization of minerals. The result is a natural glass with a smooth, often glossy surface. Obsidian from this area is usually dark black, sometimes with a slight brownish or grayish hue, depending on the trace elements and chemical composition of the original lava. Origin and History The province of Jambi is known for its volcanic activity and rich geological history. Local obsidian was traditionally used for making tools and weapons due to its hardness and the sharp edges formed during flaking. Curiosities It is interesting to note that obsidian can contain tiny gas bubbles or mineral inclusions that make it even more unique in appearance. Due to these internal structures, it can display subtle chromatic reflections or appear slightly translucent depending on the angle of the light.
