Muong Nong Tektites – A Unique Form of Tektites from Southeast Asia Muong Nong tektites represent one of the three primary forms of tektites that formed under different impact conditions. Along with the common splash-form tektites and microtektites, they are part of a group of natural glasses created by meteoritic impacts. Unlike the homogeneous splash forms, Muong Nong tektites are less uniform, providing valuable insights into the source rocks and the impact process. Characteristics and Appearance Unlike regular tektites, Muong Nong tektites show no signs of rotational shaping during flight. Their irregular, blocky, and fragmentary shapes are parts of original larger masses. They are known for their layered texture and increased internal heterogeneity. Crystalline inclusions have been identified within their structure—a feature absent in common tektites. Occurrence and Location Muong Nong tektites are found exclusively in the Australasian tektite strewn field. They occur in Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, northeast Thailand, the southern coast of China, and on Hainan Island. The specimens offered for sale come from the type locality Muong Nong in Southern Laos, where they were part of an original mass weighing approximately 200 kg.
