The Tsarev meteorite The Tsarev meteorite probably fell to Earth on December 6, 1922, at 7 a.m. near the village of Tsarev, in the Volgograd region. However, this date is not certain, as the fall was not directly observed. The first fragments were found in 1968, and the meteorite was officially identified in 1979. Characteristics Type: The Tsarev meteorite is classified as an L5 ordinary chondrite, meaning it contains a lower amount of iron compared to other chondrites. Composition: Its chemical composition is typical of L-type chondrites, with high amounts of silicon, oxygen, and magnesium, and lower contents of iron and nickel. It contains common chondritic minerals such as olivine, pyroxene, and plagioclase. Fragment weight: The largest fragment recovered weighs 284 kg, and the total mass of all known fragments of the Tsarev meteorite is approximately 1.5 tonnes. Number of fragments: A total of 28 individual fragments have been found. Distribution: The maximum distance between the various discovery sites was approximately 6 km. Additional finds: Since the 1990s, further fragments have been discovered.
