Snowflake obsidian is a type of natural volcanic glass characterized by its distinctive appearance: white or grey snowflake-like patterns scattered throughout the black vitreous matrix. These spots form due to mineral crystals such as quartz or tridymite, which develop through gradual crystallization in the originally homogeneous obsidian. Formation Like common obsidian, snowflake obsidian also forms through the rapid cooling of silica-rich lava. This process creates a glassy structure devoid of a crystal lattice. Over time, some areas of the obsidian begin to crystallize, forming small spherical structures called spherulites. These mineral inclusions visually appear as white or light grey spots resembling snowflakes, hence the name Snowflake Obsidian. Characteristics Snowflake obsidian typically has a black color with prominent white or grey spots. Its hardness ranges between 5 and 5.5 on the Mohs scale. The structure is amorphous and vitreous, but in some areas, it shows zones of partial crystallization. This type of obsidian is found in volcanic regions worldwide and is particularly well-known in Indonesia.
