Irgizite – tektite from Kazakhstan Irgizite is a specific type of tektite formed as a result of a meteorite impact in Kazakhstan. This unique form of natural glass is named after the Irgiz River region, located near the well-known Zhamanshin impact crater. Formation Following the meteorite's impact on the Earth's surface, extremely high temperatures and pressures were generated, leading to the melting and ejection of terrestrial rocks into the atmosphere, where they subsequently cooled rapidly, forming a glassy structure. A crater with a diameter of approximately 14 km was created at the impact site, and its age is estimated to be around 900,000 years. Characteristics Irgizites often have an irregular shape and a characteristic glassy texture. The color can vary, but they are usually dark, ranging from black to dark brown or greenish. Like other tektites, irgizites are primarily composed of silicon dioxide but can also contain various trace elements.
