The Borzya meteorite – a rare pallasite from Russia The Borzya meteorite was discovered in May 2021 in Zabaykalsky Krai, near the city of Borzya. This meteorite is classified among the main group pallasites. It is composed of rounded olivine crystals surrounded by iron and nickel alloys. The olivine crystals are mostly free of inclusions, but some contain thin needles of chromite and calcium pyroxene. Mass and rarity The total recovered mass is 25.62 kg, a significantly smaller quantity compared to other known pallasites. Pallasites in general are quite rare, representing only a small fraction of all known meteorites. This reduced volume of discovery makes the meteorite less accessible and its samples particularly rare and valuable. For comparison, the Sericho pallasite, from Kenya, has a total mass of up to 2.8 tons. Preservation and value The low recovered mass of the Borzya meteorite also implies that most samples are carefully preserved in scientific institutions. A small portion has been deposited at the Vernadsky Institute, and the majority is preserved at the DMUH, a museum dedicated to space research and related topics, including meteorites and other scientific collections. The main specimen of the Borzya meteorite is kept in this collection, where it is carefully analyzed and preserved for future studies. When samples of pallasites like Borzya become available on the market, their price can be higher than that of commonly available meteorites.
