The Al Haggounia 001 Meteorite – Enstatite Chondrite from Western Sahara The Al Haggounia 001 meteorite was discovered in 2006 near Al Haggounia. Initially classified as an aubrite (an enstatite-rich achondrite), subsequent studies reclassified it as an incompletely melted and vesicular impact melt belonging to an EL-type enstatite chondrite. Mass and surface characteristics This meteorite is particularly known for its mass. Approximately 3 tonnes of material have been found scattered over an area of about 40 km. Fragments vary from a few grams to several tens of kilograms. The outer surface often appears rust-brown due to strong terrestrial alteration, a sign of long exposure to terrestrial environmental conditions. Composition and structure Mineralogically, Al Haggounia 001 is composed mainly of enstatite and plagioclase, with the presence of troilite, graphite, daubréelite, oldhamite, silicon-rich kamacite, and Schreibersite. Its porous structure and the presence of yellow sulfur spots indicate extensive alteration.
