Initially, it was classified as an aubrite (an enstatite-rich achondrite), but subsequent studies reclassified it as an incompletely melted and vesicular impact melt belonging to an EL type enstatite chondrite. Mass and surface characteristics This meteorite is particularly known for its mass. Approximately 3 tons of material have been found scattered over an area of about 40 km. Fragments range from a few grams to several tens of kilograms. The outer surface often appears rusty brown due to significant terrestrial alteration, a sign of long exposure to terrestrial environmental conditions. Composition and structure From a mineralogical perspective, Al Haggounia 001 is primarily composed of enstatite and plagioclase, with the presence of troilite, graphite, daubréelite, oldhamite, silicon-rich kamacite, and Schreibersite.
