It was initially classified as an aubrite (an enstatite-rich achondrite), but subsequent studies reclassified it as an incompletely melted, vesicular impact melt belonging to an EL-type enstatite chondrite. Mass and surface characteristics This meteorite is particularly known for its mass. Approximately 3 tons of material were found scattered over an area of about 40 km. Fragments vary from a few grams to several tens of kilograms. The outer surface often appears rust-brown due to strong terrestrial alteration, a sign of long exposure to terrestrial environmental conditions. Composition and structure From a mineralogical point of view, Al Haggounia 001 is mainly composed of enstatite and plagioclase, with the presence of troilite, graphite, daubréelite, oldhamite, silicon-rich kamacite, and Schreibersite.
