Formation Like common obsidian, snowflake obsidian also forms through the rapid cooling of silica-rich lava. This process creates a glassy structure devoid of a crystal lattice. Over time, some areas of the obsidian begin to crystallize, forming small spherical structures called spherulites. These mineral inclusions visually appear as white or light gray spots resembling snowflakes, hence the name Snowflake Obsidian. Characteristics Snowflake obsidian generally has a black color with noticeable white or gray spots. Its hardness ranges between 5 and 5.5 on the Mohs scale. The structure is amorphous and glassy, but in some areas, it shows zones of partial crystallization.
